WILLIAMSPORT, Ind. – Jawan Lawrence sped past an Indiana State Trooper on northbound US 41 in Warren County around 2 p.m. Sunday, beginning a police chase that ended in Benton County near Indiana 18, according to state police.
Lawrence, 29, of Antioch, Tennessee, was trying to avoid stop sticks placed on the highway near Indiana 18, so he drove into the median, where his car became stuck. Lawrence tried to run from his car but was caught, police said.
A woman and a juvenile in the car were not injured and were able to leave the scene, police said.
However, Lawrence went to jail on suspicion of having a handgun that could fire like a machine gun, a Level 5 felony. He is also suspected of crimes including neglect of a dependent, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and a misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
In addition, he is wanted in Lake County, Indiana, for reckless driving, police said.
After his arrest, troops booked Lawrence into the Warren County Jail, police said.
