State House Representative Eliseo Lee Alcon is retiring as he needs to focus on his health

Nov. 25 – New Mexico Rep. Eliseo Lee Alcon, a Milan Democrat who was re-elected to his seat earlier this month, has announced his immediate retirement from the House of Representatives, citing the need to focus on his health.

Alcon, a military veteran who received a Bronze Star for his service as a combat medic in the Army during the Vietnam War, was first elected to his seat in House District 6 in 2009, according to a statement released Monday by House Democrats.

“Representative Alcon has been a champion for his community during his 15 years in the Roundhouse,” House Speaker Javier Martínez, D-Albuquerque, said in a statement.

“He helped achieve tremendous victories for veterans, active military personnel and all the people of New Mexico,” Martinez added. “As an experienced and retired magistrate judge, Representative Alcon brought a remarkably diverse perspective to the law. We will miss him dearly.”

Alcon chaired the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee and the House Labor, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee.

County commissioners in Cibola and McKinley counties will nominate someone to fill the seat vacated by Alcon. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will then appoint one of these individuals to serve the remainder of his term.
