A bitter explosion in the Philadelphia area for Black Friday this weekend. Here’s the prediction.

Black Friday shopping will be cold but dry across the area, with highs around 40 degrees. A lobe of bitterly cold Arctic air will arrive from Canada on Friday evening, bringing the coldest air the area has seen since last winter.

Looking ahead weather chart: Philadelphia will have a high of 46, a low of 35 on Friday, a high of 38 on Saturday, a low of 28, on Sunday a high of 39, a low of 26

Due to this blast of cold air, a NEXT Weather Warning will be in effect this weekend. Despite the sunshine, highs will only reach the mid to upper 30s on Saturday and Sunday, with chills below freezing all day and night. Speaking of nights, morning lows will dip into the 20s for the entire area, including the city, with wind chills dropping as low as the teens at times.

Be sure to winterize outdoor pipes and make special preparations for pets with a warm place to stay and fresh water that won’t freeze. Even with their warm fur, they are not used to this cold.

The month of December and the start of meteorological winter start on Sunday and everything indicates that it will continue to feel like winter for the next week.

Next week will be sunny, but unseasonably cold temperatures will continue with highs in the low 30s to near 40 degrees and lows in the mid 20s. A fast-moving system looks to move through the area Wednesday night and could bring a quick round of some snow showers to the area. Little to no snow accumulation is expected at this time.

The NEXT Weather Team will continue to monitor this system and any others as we move into the winter months.
