The Oklahoman’s Student of the Week poll for the week of December 2 is now live.
The nominations for the Oklahoman’s Student of the Week contest are in and the polls are now open for voting for the best of the best.
The Oklahoman asked superintendents, principals, teachers and guidance counselors from across the Oklahoma City area to participate in the Student of the Week program by submitting nominations for their student.
Readers now choose the best of the best in our survey. This week’s poll has five candidates.
The Oklahoman’s Student of the Week poll is at the bottom of the list of nominees. You can vote once per hour until closing time.
Last week’s winner: Katelyn Kates is the Oklahoman’s Student of the Week.
Voting is possible until Thursday, December 5 at 12 noon.
Nominations for next week’s poll will also be accepted through Thursday at 5 p.m. To nominate a student, school faculty can email StudentOfTheWeek@oklahoman.com.

Ruby Thomas, Christian School in Oklahoma: Thomas, a senior, is a motivated honor student who maintains a high GPA while simultaneously taking college classes and plans to attend UCO next fall. In addition to her academic excellence, she is deeply involved in school activities, from running sound for the state-based one-act play, supporting her classmates in their performances, or showing her school spirit and passion in volleyball. “Ruby continues to work hard in my first hour of English IV class, despite it being a full class and an early class,” says English teacher Josh Bloomfield.

Patrick Markes, Classen School of Advanced Studies at Northeast High School: Markes is an exceptional high school student who consistently demonstrates academic excellence and a deep commitment to his education. He has exceptional grades while taking several AP courses and concurrent classes. While maintaining his academic skills, he is involved in three performing ensembles at school. He is the bass section leader of the Symphony Orchestra, plays cello, violin and electric bass in a modern band and is a member of the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra. He made the top 3 of the North Central Honor Orchestra and made the second round of the All-State Orchestra. Patrick is also a leader in the orchestra program, where he excels at helping others and takes it upon himself to help individuals and the ensemble as a whole.

Kaleb Bailey, Purcell High School: Bailey currently ranks 5th in his class with a GPA of 4.23 and will graduate with honors in May. He is a National Honor Society officer, member of the Superintendent’s Honor Roll, P letter recipient, STUCO officer and leader of the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. In addition to his academics, he is the captain of the tennis team and a state qualifier in his junior season. Kaleb will attend Oklahoma Baptist University next fall and major in theology, and plans to go into ministry. Kaleb is also the co-founder of a monthly worship evening called Lakefront Fellowship. “Kaleb is kind, hardworking and humble and never seeks the spotlight but instead seeks to serve others. He is an established leader at our school and has the utmost respect from his peers and teachers alike,” said Principal Jason Sanders.

Abbi Thurman, Newcastle High School: Thurman, a senior, is valedictorian and exemplifies excellence in every aspect of her life. She excelled in AP and concurrent college classes, while also demonstrating her dedication to academic success. In addition to her academic excellence, she is an active leader, a member of the Superintendent Leadership Council and a member of the National Honor Society at the Merit level. She also excels in track and field, competing in the Varsity Track state qualifier and participating in varsity cheer, volleyball and serving as co-captain of the varsity pom team. When she’s not at school, she makes time to give back, interning at Crest Pharmacy and Newcastle Early Childhood Centre, while contributing to the Spanish Club. “Her ability to balance these commitments with grace and excellence is an inspiration to her colleagues and community,” said Counseling Assistant Leigh Heatly.

Eudonis Blackman, John Marshall Enterprise High School: Blackman is an ambitious and optimistic young man with ambitions. He has demonstrated exceptional skills both in his academic pursuits and in the digital arena, where he competes as a member of the school’s esports team. He is an AB honors student with a passion for technology. He plans to study computer science in college and dreams of starting a career in artificial intelligence. “Eudonis’ blend of academic achievement, technological ambition and appreciation for his roots and family makes him truly worthy of this recognition,” said Director Rachell (Rosh) Conner.
