Dec. 4—JAMESTOWN, ND — The man shot by a Jamestown police officer early Tuesday morning, Dec. 3, has been identified.
Devin Quinn Fontenot, 27, of Jamestown, was the suspect involved in an active shooter incident outside Fred’s Den, according to Maj. Justin Blinsky, assistant chief of police for the Jamestown Police Department.
Fontenot refused to comply with a Jamestown police officer’s command to drop his weapons and his actions endangered the safety of the officer and others, Blinsky said. Fontenot was shot by the officer, who is a five-year veteran of the department, WDAY reported.
Fontenot died of wounds sustained by gunfire, Blinsky said.
According to police, the Stutsman County Communications Center received a 911 call at 1:17 a.m. Tuesday of a man armed with a gun and a knife standing in the parking lot behind Fred’s Den, 113 1st Ave. S. stood. The caller reported that the man had been involved in a physical altercation in the bar and had been removed.
As officers responded, the 911 caller reported that a man was shooting at a building, firing many rounds, Blinsky said. When the first officer arrived on scene, Fontenot was still shooting in the parking lot.
After Fontenot was shot, officers administered first aid to him and he was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
The incident remains under investigation by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
