A 14-year-old boy is on life support after being rescued from his family’s burning home in the Jurupa Valley early Thursday morning.

CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department crews responded at 1:59 a.m. to the 3000 block of Pacific Avenue. When firefighters arrived, the one-story house was completely engulfed in flames.

The boy was trapped in the house, but was quickly rescued by the fire brigade. CBS News Los Angeles spoke with the boy’s stepmother, who said he was transported to a nearby hospital and was placed on life support.

The boy’s older brother was cut by a broken window while trying to save him. He was taken to the hospital, the stepmother said. Five dogs also died in the fire.

“My son was fast asleep and we all tried to get to him, but the smoke was so bad,” the father said.

The family said they were woken by flames coming from their kitchen. Neighbors tried to help but were concerned the fire would spread to their property.

Neighbors said the family was part of a nonprofit organization, Kidz Come First, and would host food and toy giveaways from their home.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. A fire truck that was damaged by the heat was towed away.

Fire officials have asked the Red Cross of Southern California for assistance to help the displaced family of eight.
