(CBS DETROIT) – As we prepare for the winter season, getting your car ready for a quick or long trip can make a big difference.
“Make sure you’re up to date on any oil changes or tire rotations, because if your tires are too bald or underinflated, it can pose a real hazard on the road,” says Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief of Carfax.
Experts say there are other things to keep in mind: keeping windshield washer fluid stocked in your car, packing a survival kit and checking the coolant level to make sure the heater is working.
“Make sure you have food that will last, make sure you have road torches and ice scrapers, and make sure you have a fully charged phone charger,” Olsen told CBS News Detroit.
Once it gets cold outside, experts say your vehicle’s battery loses power. Ensuring that the device is in working condition can help you stay ahead of unforeseen problems.
Good tires are best when you’re going out on the road, especially when there’s snow.
“Winter tires can really help you when you start out in the snow, but keep you safer when you’re trying to stop,” Olsen said.
As temperatures drop, your gas may not do the same, especially below a quarter tank. If you happen to see ice on the road, take it easy.
“Don’t hit the brakes when you’re on the ice. Take your foot off the brake, go across the ice and steer in a straight line as much as possible,” Olsen said.
