The Newark football community has been devastated by Friday’s fatal car crash

JERSEY CITY, NJ — CBS News New York has learned more about the victims of A fiery car crash in Newark Friday night.

Investigators say all six people in the car were killed when it drove near the southbound on-ramp of Routes 1 and 9, somehow became airborne and struck a Pulaski Skyway support column before crashing to the ground in went up in flames.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office will provide an update on the investigation into the fatal crash Monday at 3 p.m. in Newark.

Newark’s football community is devastated by the loss

Two Hudson Catholic High School football coaches were among the victims of the fatal crash, according to the Archdiocese of Newark. The archdiocese released a statement, which reads in part: “They were dedicated teachers and mentors who had a lasting impact on players, students and colleagues.”

The statement also said classes will be canceled at the school on Monday and counselors will be on site to support the community.

One of the victims was assistant coach Brad Cunningham. His parents said the family is too distraught to say anything, but warm wishes from friends poured in on social media, including from Rutgers University head coach Greg Schiano, who wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that Cunningham “was a member of our first recruiting class. and laid the foundation of the Rutgers football program.”

Hudson Catholic High School head coach Lamar McKnight and his brother Darryl were also among those killed in the crash.

“They lived, they enjoyed life”

On Saturday evening, their loved ones released balloons into the air in their memory. Their heartbroken mother said Lamar was a star football player turned coach and Darryl was a counselor.

“I loved my sons… They were alive… my little nephew… they were alive, they were enjoying life… You see the support I have here. It goes on all day long and that’s what helps with healing,” said Natasha McKnight.

State Senator Angela McKnight is married to their cousin.

“It is a terrible loss for our family – for the community – and for the other people who have also died. My condolences to all their families,” said Angels McKnight.
