The Eagles-Steelers cross-Pennsylvania matchup has politicians betting, talking and debating Wawa vs. Sheetz

The Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers don’t meet often in the regular season because they are in different conferences. The Eagles have the winning record in the team’s matchups, and won the most recent meeting in 2022, fueled by three touchdowns from wideout AJ Brown.

Before the Keystone States battle at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, politicians got involved with some soft talk and friendly betting that could embarrass some fans.

Philly Mayor’s Bet with Fetterman: Loser Wears Winner’s Hat and Takes Side in Wawa-Sheetz Rivalry

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker announced she had made a bet with Senator John Fetterman over the Keystone State rivalry.

“If the @Eagles win tomorrow, Senator Fetterman will be wearing an Eagles hat wherever he goes on Monday. And I’ll suggest he greet the people of Washington with our signature Philly hello, ‘Go Birds!'” Parker wrote on X .

Parker also bragged that former Penn State star Saquon Barkley, “the future MVP,” is an Eagle. “So you know we’ll come out on top tomorrow.”

But if the Steelers win, Fetterman, the former mayor of a city just outside Pittsburgh, will have Parker say something that would never fly in the eastern half of the state: that Sheetz is better than Wawa.

She’ll also have to wear a Steelers hat all day Monday when the black and yellow wins at The Linc.

Fetterman would have to admit that Wawa is better than Sheetz if the Eagles pull through.

Governor Josh Shapiro, a Philadelphia native, isn’t shy about applauding Birds

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Lt. Governor Austin Davis were also in attendance, posting a video on social media of them calling Philly radio station 97.5 The Fanatic and chatting with Mike Missanelli about the rivalry.

“Josh Van Juniata” says in the video that he can cheer for the Steelers when they’re not playing the Eagles, but “you can’t work your way through sports in life, especially as a governor. … I think that you have to be loyal to your sports teams and be honest with people about that, and I am that too.”

Missanelli then brings in “Austin from Pittsburgh” to talk some trash with the governor.

Shapiro jokes that Davis will have to park 12 blocks from the Linc and walk to the stadium in his Steelers jersey.

“And I’m going to invite my friends in Philly to give the lieutenant governor a very warm welcome to Philadelphia,” Shapiro said.

Davis said Steelers fans travel well and there will be plenty in Philly to support him.

Shapiro noted that Steelers fans are quick to remind him who has six Super Bowl rings and said the 10-3 team is having a great run this year.

The game starts at 4:25 PM. If the Eagles win and the Washington Commanders lose or draw, then Birds will clinch the NFC East division.
