Families enjoy a festive ride on the Polar Express at Boston South Station this holiday season

BOSTON – It was the trip of a lifetime for hundreds of Boston area children aboard the “North Pole Express” at South Station.

A Fairmount Line Commuter Rail train converted into an express train with the “North Pole” as its only stop. The event is hosted by the MBTA and Keolis to benefit children served by nonprofits in the Boston area.

MBTA General Manager Phil Eng attended the event and noted that it brought out the best in the community.

“It’s about memories, it’s about community, it’s about family, and I’m blessed to be a part of this community,” Eng told a crowd of families.

There was excitement in the air as children of all ages waited to board the train to Santa’s house. For mom Shannon Raeke, the opportunity to ride the North Pole Express is something she doesn’t take for granted.

Her son won the tickets for a school lottery and she was so excited to ride with him.

“I’ve always heard about this event and I’ve never gone,” Raeke said.

Now that she has the chance to see the action in person, she has quickly become a fan.

Her son, Kumari, is perhaps an even bigger fan of the day’s festivities.

“Every train that passes, we always watch the trains,” Raeke said. “We’ve probably watched Polar Express 20 times this season.”

Children and parents were invited to wear pajamas and sing holiday songs. They also met Santa Claus and enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies aboard the North Pole Express.

The event also featured speakers such as District Attorney Kevin Hayden, Senator Liz Miranda and several members of the Boston City Council.
