Mysterious drone sightings in the skies over Massachusetts have increased dramatically recently, sparking speculation and concern about who sent them and why.
Many Massachusetts residents have reported seeing drones flying over communities like Brockton, Boston, Harwich, Plainville, Lynn, North Grafton and Burlington, among other parts of the state.
One Bay Stater shared video of multiple drones buzzing close to their home in Brockton over the weekend.
‘And here comes another one. This is the 14th tonight,” a man can be heard saying in the video. “Every time they pass by, it seems like two different flight paths.”
A Burlington woman captured video from a drone from her bedroom window.
“At first I was driving and I thought it was a plane, but it wasn’t moving,” the woman said in a message to Boston 25. “Later I saw it again from my bedroom window and filmed it.”
Another video shared with Boston 25 showed bizarre orbs lighting up the skyline above Boston.
In addition, two people will face charges after allegedly flying a drone too close to Boston’s Logan Airport on Saturday, according to police.
In a statement last weekend, Massachusetts Governor Healey acknowledged the stunning events.
“I am aware of a growing number of drone sightings throughout Massachusetts and we are closely monitoring the situation,” Healey said. “The Massachusetts State Police are working with local and federal partners and they are prepared to support federal authorities with jurisdiction over airspace.”
A Framingham resident shared a video of an unmanned object hovering over Bellingham, noting that it “appeared larger than the average drone.”
A mother who lives on Cape Cod told Boston 25 that she counted more than a dozen strange lights in the sky above her Harwich home last week.
“Are we safe? I mean, what’s going on?” Lindsay Muto asked Boston 25 News. “I have small children, so it makes us nervous.”
Muto wasn’t the only one she saw last week. Boston 25 News received similar cell phone videos from many viewers. In some videos, the person on the other side of the camera expresses disbelief.
Boston 25 News viewers also reported drone sightings in Revere, Methuen, Worcester, Whitman and over the parking lot of a Target in Easton.
Similar drones reported in parts of New York and New Jersey have turned out to be “manned aircraft that are often mistaken for drones,” according to Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
National security officials have said the drones do not appear to be a sign of foreign interference or a threat to public safety, but they cannot say for sure who or what is responsible for the sudden spike in sightings.
Senator Chuck Schumer has called on the US Department of Homeland Security to deploy better drone tracking technology to identify the drones and their operators.
The FBI is one of several agencies investigating the reported sightings and has asked residents to share videos, photos and other information about the drones.
