China is building the world’s largest artificial island airport in Dalian

China is building what is said to be the world’s largest man-made island airport to fortify Dalian, a northeastern city and transportation hub.

According to the website of the Liaoning provincial government, Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport will cover an island of 20 km², reports South China Morning Mail (S.C.M.P).

This size surpasses both Hong Kong International Airport, which covers 12.48 km², and Japan’s 10.5 km² Kansai Airport, both of which are also on man-made islands.

The new airport is expected to make a significant contribution to the economy of Dalian, a city that already trades with Japan and South Korea due to its strategic location, the news agency said.

Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport will be the first airport on an artificial island on the coast of mainland China. The intention is to have four runways and a terminal area of 900,000 m².

Initially, the terminal buildings will handle 43 million passengers annually, more than double the capacity of Dalian’s current airport, and are designed to accommodate up to 80 million passengers annually, Airports Council International said.

The facility is also expected to handle one million tons of cargo annually.

The airport has an investment of US$4.3 billion, with completion scheduled for 2035.

As of August this year, the provincial government website reported the completion of a “deep foundation treatment” on a reclaimed area of 77,000 m².

Plans were also made for further land reclamation and laying the foundations of the terminal buildings.

Dalian’s existing airport, Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport, has been operational for almost a century and has reached its maximum capacity after several expansions, said S.C.M.P.

“China is building the world’s largest artificial island airport in Dalian” was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a brand owned by GlobalData.
