Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Massachusetts fell last week compared to the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.

New unemployment claims, a gauge for layoffs, fell to 8,757 in the week ending Dec. 14, down from 9,425 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. unemployment benefits last week reached 220,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Delaware saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 32.3%. Georgia, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage decline in new claims, with claims down 50.6%.
