The Chicago Blackhawks made it three straight wins for the first time during the Connor Bedard era with their win over the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. On Saturday, they hit the road to play the Calgary Flames in search of their fourth straight game.
Things didn’t start well for Chicago, as Calgary took a 2-0 lead in the first period and carried it into intermission. Another multi-goal comeback was necessary if the Hawks wanted to make it four in a row. They already had one on the streak.
In the second period, Connor Bedard scored to get Chicago on the board, within one. This was a beautiful shot after Taylor Hall found him with a stunning pass on a two-on-one. Bedard now has 30 career goals, passing Patrick Kane (29) for the second-most goals scored by a teenager in franchise history.
Throughout the remainder of the second period, the Flames scored three unanswered points to make it 5-1. At that point, it felt like the Hawks probably weren’t going to win. That said, this team doesn’t stop playing regardless of the score.
Within the first minute of the third period, Tyler Bertuzzi scored to make it 5-2. The momentum carried to the point where he was able to score a second goal of the match at 11:30 of the final frame.
Connor Bedard assisted on both Bertuzzi goals. That made it a three-point night for Bedard, who now has 29 points in 34 games played. That’s incredible production for a 19-year-old player, the second-youngest in the NHL.
To make things extra interesting, Ilya Mikheyev scored at 18:52, bringing the Hawks within one goal (5-4). Mikheyev now has a goal in four straight games. As with all his other goals of late, Teuvo Teravainen assisted, setting up another two-point effort.
Calgary eventually put one into the empty net, securing the 6-4 win for them. The Hawks were unable to get the win and make it four in a row, but Bedard had a great night along with some other prominent Blackhawks.
It’s been said before and it will be said again. Right now, wins and losses don’t matter to the Hawks this season. Would it be nice to win more? Certainly. The long-term value lies in developing players to get the most out of them.
Since Anders Sorensen took over, we’re seeing some of that pay off at the NHL level. Both young players and veterans have found the back of the net much more often.
The Blackhawks now have one more game before the holiday break. They will make a stop in St. Paul on Monday to take on the Minnesota Wild for a divisional matchup. After another big offensive game in Calgary, Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks should believe their group heading into the next game.
