(CBS-DETROIT) — DTE Energy says some of its customers are overdue for their gas meter inspections and are at risk of having service disconnected.
Customers may have received an alert via text messages, emails, phone calls and postcards in the mail.
DTE Energy Gas Operations Manager Alissa Jackson says customers who fail the inspection will have their service terminated for safety reasons.
Repairing a gas line can cost $6,000.
“I can’t emphasize enough the importance,” Jackson said. “We cannot have natural gas leaks in customer homes. It is an extreme hazard that we do not want anyone to be exposed to. So it is of the utmost importance that you contact us if you receive that postcard you are due.” the post.”
The company has been tasked by the Michigan Public Service Commission to ensure no customers have past due inspections by the end of the year.
Jackson says about 100 yards still need to be inspected as of Dec. 31.
DTE officials say the inspections are free and take about 15 minutes.
Anyone suspicious or unaware of a DTE technician visiting their home is encouraged to call 877-853-9434 and confirm their identity. Two people in October posed as DTE workers and allegedly murdered a 72-year-old man and his wife tied up with tape in their home.
