The shot that prompted the lockdown came from a teenager who mishandled a gun and shot himself, said Miami Township Assistant Police Chief Jason McCarty.
Mindy Meltzer heard the shot as she left Macy’s. She says mall employees started asking people to leave.
‘I have to get everyone out. I want everyone to leave,” Meltzer said.
There were cops everywhere outside the mall.
Meltzer said she couldn’t imagine how people felt when they saw police enter the mall looking for the shooter.
“Kids don’t know what’s going on, but they see their parents getting upset and it upsets them, so it makes them even more scared,” Meltzer said.
Police have not located the shooter at this time.
Jason Rhein, who was at the mall, believes the shooting won’t stop people from shopping.
“You can’t actually predict it. There’s nothing you can do to make yourself safer from it,” Rhein said. “You just hope you’re not there when it happens.”
