Red flags for common holiday scams

MINNEAPOLIS — Christmas shoppers are running out of time to find gifts for family and friends. That deadline pressure is exactly what scammers use to steal your money and personal information.

Whether they’re walking through a mall or with their hands on a computer, holiday shoppers who are busy or procrastinating need to act quickly, and that leaves them vulnerable.

“Scammers are taking advantage of our emotions right now and one of the things we’re feeling is the desperation to get everything done before our deadline,” said Bao Vang, the vice president of communications for the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota. . “We especially feel exploited when it comes to an urgent deal, a deal for a limited time, and when it comes to deals that require immediate action.”

If you are in a physical store, you can rely on these limited-time offers. However, things get vague online, especially on social media. It’s full of ads that pretend to be a company you trust or create a website that looks legitimate, sometimes with the help of artificial intelligence.

“Once they get you on that site, they’re going to put malware on your system, which will take your personal information. Or they’re going to lure you in with this incredible deal, you’re going to buy it. By purchasing it you’re handing over your valuable credit card information,” said Vang.

How can you protect yourself from last-minute shopping fraud?

The BBB says:

  1. Make sure it is a secure website with HTTPS and a padlock on the URL.
  2. Don’t be tempted by social media ads.
  3. Search the company on the Better Business Bureau website to see if it has been flagged as a scam.
  4. Shop in person at legitimate retailers.

Another tip is to use a credit card instead of a debit card for online transactions. It makes it easier to dispute purchases and protects your money.
