SACRAMENTO – A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Nevada east of Lake Tahoe on Monday afternoon, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
According to the USGS, it happened shortly after 3 p.m. and was initially recorded as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake before being downgraded. The earthquake’s epicenter was in the city of Yerington in Lyon County, east of Tahoe and Carson City.
Several aftershocks of magnitude 2.5 to 3.5 have also been reported. Here is a map showing where tremors occurred in Nevada and California. The shaking was felt as far west as Sacramento and into Modesto.
The California Office of Emergency Services said it would work with local, state and federal partners to provide any assistance needed in Western Nevada as a result of the earthquake.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Department said no injuries or damage were reported as a result of the earthquake.
Monday’s earthquake comes just four days later a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the coast of Northern California near Humboldt County, prompting a mid-day tsunami warning. That earthquake was first recorded at a magnitude of 6.6 before being upgraded to a magnitude of 7.0.
