A California school was placed among the top 10 U.S. colleges. No, it wasn’t Stanford or Cal

A college in California ranked in the top ten colleges nationwide, and no, it wasn’t Stanford, Berkeley, or UCLA.

Personal finance company WalletHub has released its 2025 rankings of the top universities nationwide. More than 700 schools are ranked based on cost, campus safety and career outcomes.

WalletHub determined that Princeton University was the best university in America, followed by fellow Ivy League schools, Yale and Harvard.

However, the California Institute of Technology, the private research university known for its science and engineering programs that gained pop culture fame as the home of the sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” outpaced other Ivy League schools to finish in seventh place. Caltech, based in Pasadena, has fewer than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled this fall, according to the private school.

WalletHub determined the rankings by looking at several metrics such as student selectivity, cost and funding, faculty resources, campus safety, campus experience, and educational and career outcomes. Admissions rates, student loan debt, student-faculty ratios and former student income were among the factors measured for these rankings.
