At least seven people living at an assisted living facility in West Hills had to be assessed by paramedics on Monday after a fire broke out in the home’s attic.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire was reported just before 5:20 a.m. at a home in the 7600 block of N. Faust Avenue.

The fire brigade arrived on scene and found that the fire had already billowed smoke throughout the house upon arrival. They had to cut several holes in the roof to let the smoke out from the inside.

The property functions as a 24-hour care center for elderly residents, of which there were reportedly seven at the time of the fire. Crews say five of these residents were bedridden and forced to take shelter when the fire broke out.
