A Florence man died Saturday after he was struck by a car while walking southbound on the north shoulder of Highway 101 near milepost 192.
Oregon State Police officials said 40-year-old Garrick Wall was walking southbound on the northbound shoulder of the highway near South Loftus Road around 8 p.m. when he attempted to cross the roadway at a non-crosswalk. Wall was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time, which likely contributed to the poor visibility, according to a news release about the incident.
As Wall was crossing the road, a southbound GMC Terrain SUV driven by James Harpole, a 58-year-old Cheshire resident, struck Wall in the left southbound lane.
Wall was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and passenger of the GMC Terrain were uninjured.
Traffic along the highway was delayed for about three hours while police investigated.
