Mandan, North Dakota, sits quietly across the Missouri River from Bismarck, a city that prides itself on its community and quality of life. Travelers often skip the charming town in favor of Bismarck or en route to other destinations.
Mandan offers travelers plenty of natural beauty and history. But the fun festivals show how special the place is. Here are eight family-friendly events that might make you want to become a Mandan resident.
Hit a truck
Every year in mid-May, Mandan offers you an up-close, personal experience with cars, trucks and vehicles of all shapes and sizes. The event is designed to introduce children to machinery, from trucks and snow plows to cranes and buses. Imagine your children’s smiles as they discover five blocks of giant machines on wheels.
Buggies-N-Blues
In June, 35,000 to 40,000 people visit Main Street to see hot rods and classic rides at one of Mandan’s most popular festivals. It is a dream event for car enthusiasts of all ages. Enjoy music from local bands and artists as you take a trip down memory lane and view the classic cars.
Mandan Rodeo Days
Experience the thrill of one of the world’s oldest and most famous rodeos. The event is part of the city’s big 4th of July celebration and features bulls, broncs and tons of fun. North Dakota’s largest regular-season rodeo pays more than $100,000 to winning cowboys.
Mandan Independence Day Parade
No Fourth of July celebration is complete without a parade. Mandan is passionate about our country’s birthday, with Independence Day festivities dating back to 1881, almost as old as the city. An annual tradition for many families, the parade is now the largest in North Dakota.
Mandan Art in the Park Festival
Initially founded to promote local artists, Art in the Park has grown into a popular summer event that draws exhibitors and thousands of spectators from throughout North Dakota and neighboring states. You’ll find there’s plenty to do, from viewing different types of art to watching entertainers and enjoying delicious food. It is part of the Fourth of July festivities.
Mandan 4th of July road race
The 5K run is a long-running tradition (pun intended) and the perfect way to kick off the Independence Day festivities. It is a fun activity for friends and family. Plus, you can be proud that a portion of your registration fee goes to the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation.
Ghost fortress
Mandan is home to the incredible Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, packed with history and natural beauty. Every weekend in October, the park transforms into a legendary Halloween attraction with four unique haunted houses. Imagine how creepy reconstructed historic military buildings can be. The event has a less intense evening called ‘Spookless Night’ so younger children can enjoy it. No wonder Haunted Fort has become so popular for families.
Mandan Holiday Lights on Main
Experience the magic of the holidays as you stroll through a winter wonderland full of dazzling lights. Get cozy around a fire pit with family and friends while sipping hot chocolate and listening to holiday music. During your giving season, you can also bring joy to a child in need by donating to the local clothing and funding drive.
Other things to do in Mandan, North Dakota
In addition to the extraordinary community events, Mandan has beautiful parks along the Missouri River. There are plenty of boutiques, art galleries, fine dining options and local craft breweries. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum are excellent choices if you enjoy history.
You can reach the underrated Theodore Roosevelt National Park by driving two hours west. For those who enjoy scenic drives with attractions along the way, head to the Enchanted Highway.
With so many attractions in outdoor recreation, history and art, Mandan is an excellent place for families. The festivals and events are the icing on the cake.
