A Hunt County man is being held on murder charges

Nov. 15— VAN ZANDT COUNTY — A Hunt County man is being held in the Van Zandt County Jail after being charged with the murder of 50-year-old Yvonne Lewis that occurred in the community of Rolling Oaks.

Phillip Shane Cromwell, 48, of Waco Bay near Lake Tawakoni was arrested Nov. 7 after police say he ran over Lewis with his car the night before.

According to an affidavit released this week, the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call just after 11 p.m. on Nov. 6, with the caller reporting that she was on her way to the hospital with an injured Lewis who had been hit by another car.

Cromwell and Lewis were in a relationship, according to the woman who called. Lewis died in hospital from her injuries.

Cromwell arrived about two hours after Lewis was admitted to hospital. According to the affidavit, Cromwell gave different accounts of what happened, which did not appear consistent with the victim’s injuries.

The next day, a witness came forward and told a Van Zandt County deputy that he watched the incident on a security camera from a nearby RV. In the affidavit, the witness said he saw Cromwell hit Lewis, then Cromwell reversed the car and backed over her as she stood next to the passenger door. Cromwell then put Lewis in the car and drove away.

Cromwell’s bond has been set at $500,000 bond. He has an arrest record from 1998 to 2018 in Hunt County for charges ranging from multiple DWIs to theft of property to violating a protective order.
