A Kansas City man dies days after being attacked by multiple dogs

After suffering multiple serious dog bites last week, a Kansas City man died Wednesday from his injuries, police said.

Kansas City police officers were dispatched to the 3200 block of E 80th St. on Saturday, Nov. 2, around 9:50 p.m., after reports of an animal attack, said Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

When officers arrived, several dogs were still attacking the man, although officers were able to scare the dogs off, Becchina said.

At the scene of the attack, officers discovered that a woman had also been attacked and suffered serious injuries to her limbs.

Both dog bite victims were transported to an area hospital, where the man died Wednesday after his injuries progressed.

Nothing further was known about the woman’s injuries on Thursday evening.

The investigation into the attack is still ongoing and animal control officers will continue to be involved, according to Becchina. The Kansas City Pet Project became involved in the investigation shortly after the attack.

“This is an active KCPD investigation, and our Animal Services Division is communicating with and assisting in the investigation of this tragic incident,” said Tori Fugate, KCPP director of communications.

According to the American Veterinary Association, approximately 4.5 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs every year. According to the National Library of Medicine, about 30 to 50 of these bites escalate to a fatal attack each year.
