A major thoroughfare in Bloomington will be closed as early as this week. Here’s what you need to know.
Which lane in Bloomington is closed?
The right lane of the westbound Ind. 45/46 Bypass will be closed just east of Interstate 69.
When and for how long is the ring road closed?
The roadway will close as early as Friday and be closed for up to two weeks, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Why is the ring road closed?
INDOT and its contractor, Crider and Crider, are closing the roadway for utility relocation work.
What should drivers do?
INDOT asked drivers to “slow down, use extra caution and avoid distractions when driving near work zones.”
Why is work taking place at the intersection?
Construction has been going on in the area since the spring.
INDOT adds left and right lanes to Ind. 45/46 Bypass near Stonelake Drive and Monroe Street and designates U-turn areas by adding a concrete wall to the median. The project involved lane closures, although INDOT has opened additional lanes during high-traffic events, such as Indiana University homecoming, and reopened all lanes in mid-November.
The $9.5 million construction project is expected to be completed next summer.
INDOT officials have said the improvements will reduce the number of crashes and injuries. They say there have been 65 accidents in the area in the past decade, mostly involving rear-end crashes, but also T-bone and head-on crashes when motorists try to cross or turn off the state highway.
