UPDATE: 1:45 p.m
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands, in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday.
Weather officials say the combination of dry fuels, low relative humidity and strong trade winds will create critical fire conditions in leeward areas both this afternoon and Thursday afternoon.
Forecasters expect easterly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph and relative humidity as low as 45 percent.
According to the weather service, “a red flag warning means that critical fire conditions are now occurring or will soon occur. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.” The warning does not predict new fires will break out, officials said.
“Outdoor burning is not recommended,” the warning read. “The heat from vehicle exhaust systems can ignite dry grass. Park cars in areas that are paved or where vegetation is being pruned and cleared.

“High winds contribute to the risk of wildfires. Postpone activities that could throw off sparks until the wind dies down.”
EARLIER TODAY The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory covering most of Maui County and Hawaii Island, in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday.
East winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, are expected to blow around parts of Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii islands.
“These strong winds can tear off shingles, knock down tree limbs, blow away tents and awnings and make it difficult to steer, especially for drivers of high-profile vehicles,” the consultancy said.
Those under advice should look out for falling tree branches when walking or driving, ensure tents and canopies are secure and be prepared for power outages.
Forecasters expect the trade winds to continue to strengthen today, peaking tonight.
There is also a high wind warning in effect for the Big Isle peaks until 6pm today.
East winds of 80 to 100 km/h, with gusts up to 110 km/h, which will make travel to the peaks dangerous due to strong crosswinds, officials said, especially for lightweight and flashy vehicles.
The strong winds are likely to continue until Thursday morning.
