A sinkhole appears after a water main break, blocking traffic in north Phoenix

An 8-inch water main break caused a sinkhole and blocked traffic in north Phoenix on Nov. 11.

The emergency repair required a water shutoff that was estimated to last five to six hours, according to the Phoenix Water Services Department.

The southbound curb on 35th Avenue was closed to traffic Monday evening and there was a complete road closure on Aire Libre Avenue from 35th Avenue to 35th Drive.

Phoenix Water Service officials estimate the repairs would take one to two days.

No residential customers were affected by the water shutoff, although a landscaping service and a fire hydrant were temporarily affected, said Jimena Garrison with the department.
