A Texas man pleads guilty to assaulting police officers during the January 6 riot at the US Capitol

A Texas man pleaded guilty Friday to assaulting officers during the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Columbia announced in a news release.

Kyle Douglas McMahan, 42, of Watauga, pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or obstructing certain officers — a misdemeanor. He will be sentenced on Sept. 10, 2024.

According to court documents, McMahan was among a group of rioters who breached the police perimeter and stormed toward the U.S. Capitol.

As U.S. Capitol Police attempted to keep rioters out of the building, McMahan pushed an officer, according to the release.

After entering the building, he went to another police line and had rioters follow him, according to court documents. At the police line, the suspect grabbed an officer’s hand. He remained at the barrier as a group of rioters tried to overpower officers guarding an entrance.

As officers formed a line around rioters in the building’s rotunda, McMahan grabbed an officer’s arm as he tried to disperse another rioter.

McMahan told the officer, “Don’t do that.” [expletive] “Touching him,” the court documents state.

He also pushed an officer as a line of police began to lead the rioters out of the building. McMahan then pulled another officer away from the rioters as he tried to move further into the building. When an officer tried to restrain McMahan by putting a hand on him, McMahan slapped his hand away, the press release said.

McMahan left the building but remained outside as police led the rioters out, the news release said.

He was arrested on December 6, 2023 in Texas.

In the 41 months since January 6, 2021, more than 1,450 people have been charged in nearly all 50 states with crimes related to the January 6 events at the Capitol, including more than 500 people charged with assault on an officer, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

The investigation is ongoing.
