Additional alarm fire burns in a warehouse on the South Side of Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago firefighters battled an extra-alarm fire at a warehouse in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Saturday evening.

The fire started in a warehouse in the 4100 block of South Oakley Avenue shortly before 6:30 p.m. Around 6:45 p.m. it was raised to a 2-11 alarm fire, and by 7:20 p.m. it had been raised to a 3-11 alarm, meaning there were at least twelve fire engines, four fire engines, two tower ladders, and approximately 125 firefighters responding to the fire.

A Level 1 hazardous materials response was also initiated. According to unconfirmed fire reports, explosions occurred in the building after the fire started.

At least part of the building has collapsed. A large plume of thick gray smoke was visible from the top of the Willis Tower downtown, six miles away.

It was unclear whether anyone was present in the warehouse when the fire broke out.

No injuries have been reported.
