Alberto Storm is bringing thunderstorms and lightning to the Central Valley

FRESNO, Calif. (KGPE) – Central California had strong thunderstorms Monday afternoon. These storms came from the southwest and produced a lot of lightning, thunder and even hail.

These storms also provided a temporary relief from the triple-digit heat, but the cooler weather did not last long. Not long after the storm passed, temperatures warmed again.

This moisture came from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto. Alberto formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and grew into a tropical storm last Wednesday morning. It made landfall early Thursday morning near Tampico, Mexico, before weakening.

Our weather pattern today features a strong ridge of high pressure over the southwestern US. The flow around high pressure moves clockwise. The remaining moisture from Alberto was sucked into that current today, sending the storms straight into Central California.

Around noon, storms began hitting areas west of I-5.

At 2 p.m. there were several strong thunderstorms in the valley and foothills. Many residents of the Valley regularly saw lightning and heard a lot of thunder.

At 4:00 PM, many of the storms moved out of the valley, but strong storms hit the Sierra.

Some moisture will remain on Tuesday, but it will not be a repeat of Monday. The Sierra will see the brunt of the storms on Tuesday, while the Valley will experience more triple-digit heat.
