Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the fatal I-90 crash Sunday morning

Oct. 22—SALEM, SD — A 26-year-old Canistota woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 Sunday morning.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says the woman was driving a 2002 Mazda Protege westbound on the highway near mile marker 366 when her vehicle left the roadway and struck the head of a guardrail. The vehicle then returned to the road, where the driver of a 2005 Dodge Ram collided with the rear of the Mazda. A Peterbilt semi-trailer pulling a livestock truck then collided with the front of the Mazda.

The woman was not wearing a seat belt and alcohol is believed to be a factor, officials said. She was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The crash occurred at 7:13 a.m., about 2 miles east of the Salem US 81 exit on I-90.

Authorities say the man driving the Dodge Ram is a 56-year-old from Alexandria who was wearing a seat belt. He suffered minor injuries.
