A discount store chain is cutting prices even further this holiday season — and that’s something to be thankful for.
On October 16, Aldi announced its cheapest Thanksgiving basket in five years, giving 10 people a full meal for less than $47. The chain cites a NielsenIQ study published in the Wall Street Journal earlier this year that found that food prices for hundreds of items have increased by 50% since 2019. That’s why Aldi decided to make the meal cheaper than it cost at the time.
Aldi said the sub-$4.70 per person meal forgoes all the “sales, coupons, minimum purchase requirements, loyalty cards and other hoops needed to save at traditional grocers” and instead comes in a simple grab-and-go go form comes.
Aldi’s Thanksgiving basket includes a Butterball turkey (presumably 16 pounds) with herbs, gravy, rolls, macaroni and cheese, and stuffing. It also contains the ingredients to make cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie.
“Every day at ALDI, we are focused on finding ways to offer our customers the lowest possible prices – and this Thanksgiving is no different,” Aldi CEO Jason Hart said in a press release, adding that 25% of American households now shop at the chain. “We’ve been working hard this Thanksgiving to provide the best value products so everyone can enjoy a traditional meal with family and friends without having to scale back.”
For people heading to a Friendsgiving potluck or wanting to keep things more casual on the big day, Aldi is also selling three Thanksgiving bundles for under $10. Each bundle includes a bottle of Aldi-exclusive California Heritage Pinot Noir and one of the following products:
There are a few caveats to Aldi’s Thanksgiving basket: Its availability may vary by store location and is subject to change. The prizes on the basket are valid from October 16 to November 27 (the day before Thanksgiving).
The news comes as the grocer was involved in a recall of chicken and turkey products made by pre-cooked meat maker BrucePac due to potential listeria contamination.
Many of the recalled products are ready-to-eat salad, rice or pasta bowls containing potentially contaminated chicken or turkey and were sold at major retailers nationwide such as Trader Joe’s, HEB, Walmart and Aldi.
