Amazon joins the LABS Initiative to promote garment worker safety

Amazon’s decision to join the LABS Initiative reflects the company’s commitment to raising safety standards in manufacturing facilities and promoting responsible and sustainable business practices.

By leveraging the initiative’s expertise and resources, Amazon aims to strengthen its efforts to improve construction and fire safety while promoting employee well-being.

“Achieving safe, equitable, fair and sustainable supply chains has long been a priority for Amazon across our businesses,” said Leigh Anne DeWine, director of social responsibility at Amazon. “Recognizing our responsibility to maintain safe work environments, we are pleased to join the LABS Initiative. We remain committed to continuously improving working conditions.”

Pramit Chanda, global director of textiles and manufacturing at IDH and spokesperson for the LABS Initiative, added: “As advocates for safe work environments and sustainability across the supply chain, we are pleased to welcome Amazon to the LABS Initiative. Together we look forward to working together to ensure employee well-being and contribute to responsible purchasing practices.”

The manufacturing centers that supply Amazon in Cambodia, India, Indonesia and Vietnam were among regions that helped the LABS Initiative achieve 500 factory commitments for safer workplaces in March.

In April, Amazon announced it is investing more than €700 million in new robotics and AI-powered innovations for its European fulfillment center (FC) network, creating new jobs and an improved shopping experience for its customers.
