Americans are largely divided on whether they approve of Trump’s conviction: Survey

Americans are largely divided over whether they approve of former President Trump’s recent conviction in his hush money trial in New York, according to a new survey.

The YouGov survey found that about 50 percent of Americans agree with the jury’s decision to convict the former president on 34 charges. In the same survey, about 19 percent said they were “not sure” whether they agreed with the decision and about 30 percent said they disagreed.

Trump on Thursday became the first former US president to become a convicted felon after a jury found him guilty on all counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments his then-fixer, Michael Cohen, made to porn actor Stormy Daniels, prior to the 2016 elections.

Shortly after the jury read the verdict, Trump railed against the trial outside the courtroom.

“This was a rigged, shameful trial. The real verdict will be pronounced by the people on November 5, and they know what happened here, and everyone knows what happened here,” Trump said.

Other findings from the survey included that about 47 percent of Americans agreed that the former president received a “fair trial.” About 18 percent said they were “not sure” whether Trump received a “fair trial,” while about 37 percent said he did not.

President Biden criticized Trump on Friday for his language about the fairness of the trial.

“It’s reckless, it’s dangerous and it’s irresponsible for someone to say this is rigged just because they don’t like the verdict,” the president said.

“Our justice system must be respected, and we must never allow anyone to tear it down; It’s that simple,” he added.

The YouGov survey was conducted on May 30 and included responses from 3,040 US adults.
