An Elk Grove man is charged with driving under the influence in a fatal car crash in Sacramento

An Elk Grove man was charged with driving under the influence Monday in a two-vehicle crash that killed another man in Sacramento.

Alvin V. Chand, 46, appeared for his arraignment hearing in Sacramento Superior Court Wednesday afternoon. Chand faces one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Chand was being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He was taken into custody about nine hours after the fatal crash and police initially said he was charged with murder. However, that charge had been removed from the prison log. Prosecutors have only filed manslaughter charges against Chand.

The judge scheduled Chand to return to court on Tuesday to review his case and for the court to determine whether to set bail in his criminal case.

The crash was reported around 12:45 a.m. Monday near Sunmeadow Drive and Franklin Boulevard, Sacramento police announced late Tuesday.

Police said authorities found a man with life-threatening injuries in one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The man killed in the crash was identified as Daniel Lee Jennings, 54, of Sacramento, the Sacramento County coroner’s office confirmed Wednesday.

Police said in the news release that officers arrested the driver of the other vehicle in the crash, later identified as Chand, who “exhibited objective signs of intoxication.” Chand was taken to a hospital for medical treatment before being admitted to jail

Detectives from the police Major Collision Investigation Unit, along with crime scene investigators, took over the investigation.
