An explosion and fire at a weapons factory in Poland kills one person and injures another

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — An explosion at an arms factory in Poland caused a fire Monday that killed a 59-year-old man who worked there and injured another person, officials said.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said there is no reason to believe there was an “external force” behind Monday’s explosion at the Mesko factory.

Poland has recently witnessed a series of fires, and officials have been investigating whether they could be the result of sabotage by Russian or Belarusian secret services in response to Polish support for Ukraine.

The explosion took place at the Mesko factory in the town of Skarzysko-Kamienna, according to a statement published by the Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (Polish Armaments Group), a state holding group that unites arms production companies.

“This is a huge tragedy for the entire Polish Armaments Group,” the group said on its website. It said an investigation was underway.

The factory is a manufacturer of ammunition, including rockets. Skarzysko-Kamienna is located about 135 kilometers south of the Polish capital Warsaw.
