Andy Kim wins New Jersey’s Democratic Senate primary over Bob Menendez’s indicted seat

CRANFORD, NJ — Democrat Andy Kim will run for office has sued Senator Robert Menendez‘s United States Senate seat in New Jersey.

The Associated Press projects that Kim has won the New Jersey Democratic Senate primary.

Menendez told CBS New York’s Christine Sloan on Monday he had submitted more than 2,000 signatures to have his name placed on the November ballot as an independent.

Voters choose a Republican and a Democratic candidate to run for that seat. The polls in New Jersey close at 8 p.m. The most recent figures can be found on the CBS New York results page.

Congressman Andy Kim faced union organizer Patricia Campos Medina and activist Larry Hamm on the Democratic side.

Kim asked a federal court judge in the spring to change the provincial voting system which he said gave the governor’s wife, Tammy Murphy, an unfair advantage. Murphy eventually dropped out of the race.

“Right now, the sitting senator that we’re trying to replace is in the courtroom, and I think this is something that’s causing so much frustration among voters in New Jersey and across the country,” Kim said.

Curtis Bashaw and Christina Serrano Glassner are running for Republican nominee

Businessman Curtis Bashaw, owner of several hotels, including Congress Hall in Cape May, is taking the Republican side.

“Inflation is too high. We need better jobs in our state. People want a safe border. They want to support law enforcement,” Bashaw said.

Bashaw says he is a strong supporter of Israel.

“I think what has happened on our college campuses with this rise in anti-Semitism has been a disgrace to our values of free speech and free assembly, and I think Andy Kim’s silence on these matters is, quite frankly, deafening. He voted against the anti-Semitism law,” he said.

“Virtually everyone I talk to wants to make sure the hostages get out, but we also want to make sure that the humanitarian aid is there, that we can stop this potential famine in northern Gaza, try to put an end to this violence. Kim said.

Bashaw’s opponent, Christina Serrano Glassner, is endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Her campaign did not return calls from CBS New York.
