Heavy fog and a large number of travelers caused delays at LAX.

The United Airlines terminal was busy on Sunday, with long lines of passengers waiting to check in or board flights, many of whom faced delays.

The day before, severe weather across the country had already led to more than 9,000 flight delays and hundreds of cancellations due to rain, snow and tornado threats. At LAX, poor visibility due to mid-morning fog contributed to more than 110 flight delays, with eight cancellations reported.

One traveler, Gina Griffin, was trying to reach Aspen with her three children. Her flight, originally scheduled for 8 a.m., was postponed until 1 p.m

On the other hand, there was some relief for road travelers. Gas prices were reportedly the lowest in three years, with an average price of $4.34 per gallon, compared to $4.67 last year. AAA predicts a record 119 million people traveling on New Year’s Day, with nearly 107 million traveling on the nation’s highways and 8 million flying.

The TSA expected high passenger volume on December 30, which was expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the season. Despite hopes for better weather conditions, the holiday rush was expected to continue through the weekend, contributing to delays and crowded airports across the country.
