Antioch Marina is a popular place to beat the heat, as some stay indoors to avoid high temperatures

East Contra Costa County definitely felt the heat on Wednesday, with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Many said it was just too hot to go outside. Others went to the marina in Antioch, making it one of the busiest places in town.

“This is the hottest I’ve ever seen it,” said Lorena Teixera of Antioch. “The heat is so still.”

Whether you take a dip in the water or head out on a jet ski, many consider it one of the best ways to beat the heat.

“It feels good,” Teixera said. “I’m excited to dive into this.”

Jimmy Pittman didn’t think about leaving his house until the temperatures began to cool.

“I had to wait until now to come out,” he said. “It was too hot before.”

While the Marina was a big hit with many, Antioch’s Water Park was closed on one of the hottest days of the year due to a power outage. The outage also forced one of the city’s cooling centers to close.

Pittman said temperatures were unbearable everywhere, reaching over 40 degrees.

“Just stay inside, honestly,” he said. “Only AC. But the AC can’t even keep up today.”

As temperatures dropped below 100 degrees, Ted Miller and his son Austin went outside to get some fresh air. They will not be able to see the Fourth of July parade, which was canceled due to the extreme heat.

But Antioch still plans to hold a community event in the city hall parking lot in the evening.

During the day, Lorena said there were only two places she went.

“Stay inside or come here and cool off,” she said.

PG&E said the power outage at the water park was due to equipment failure. Power went out Tuesday night and was expected to come back on at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

That time has now been postponed until July 4, 4am.
