Arctic air will retreat in time for the weekend

We were hit last night by an Arctic cold front that robbed us of our pleasant temperatures on Wednesday. Temperatures at midnight were still in the 40s, but by sunrise readings had dropped into the low 20s. The cold set up camp during the day with highs in the afternoon in many areas that never reached freezing again.

The wind will die down tonight, causing the stagnant air to cool further. Temperatures will drop into the mid teens. Friday will be better, but still chilly with highs in the 40s.

The weekend is still on track to get back into mild mode. A fresh southwest wind will blow in warmer air and sunshine will allow temperatures to rise well into the 50s on Saturday.

There will be a rapid increase in cloud cover on Sunday, which could weaken warming. There is also a chance of rain in the afternoon, especially near and south of I-44.

Springfield has not recorded 0.10″ of precipitation since November 18, 17 days ago. Rainfall with Sunday’s storm is expected to be light along I-44, with heavier amounts in the southeast.

Monday is shaping up to be a transition day and will bring clouds and cool temperatures before the next winter sky arrives on Tuesday. A cold spell will continue through mid-week. The longer distance pattern looks milder from late in the week through the following weekend. The Springfield Parade forecast looks breezy and dry with temperatures in the 50s.
