Arguing leads to shooting that leaves man dead in Kansas City gas station parking lot

A man was killed in a shooting near a gas station east of Highway 71 on Thursday morning.

Officers responded to the 2200 block of East 31st Street just after midnight for a report of a shooting. They found a man with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a Shell Xpress Mart gas station.

Emergency services arrived on the scene and determined that the man had died on the spot.

Investigators said an argument in the parking lot led to shots being fired and the victim was struck by bullets, Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.

On Thursday, detectives interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage from the area.

Police have not yet released the identity of the victim.

The killing is Kansas City’s 116th homicide of 2024, according to data kept by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 146 homicides.

If you have any information about the shooting, you are asked to contact investigators directly at 816-234-5043 or anonymously to the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477. A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information reported anonymously to the TIPS Hotline.
