Artificial tunnel with lighting and ventilation found under the US-Mexico border in El Paso

Border Patrol agents early Thursday discovered a man-made tunnel connecting Ciudad Juárez to El Paso equipped with lighting, ventilation and wood bracing, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.

Officers inspected the area on January 9 and discovered the tunnel around 1:15 am. The discovery came after removing a metal plate covering a 36-by-36-inch access hole. The tunnel, approximately 6 feet high and 4 feet wide, was equipped with lighting, a ventilation system and wooden reinforcement.

Border Patrol agents discovered a man-made tunnel connecting Ciudad Juárez to El Paso on January 9, 2025.

“We are proud of the agents who uncovered this smuggling infrastructure used by transnational criminal organizations,” said El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony Scott Good. “Together with our partners, we want to investigate these illegal activities and bring all perpetrators to justice.”

Authorities including the FBI, El Paso CBP, El Paso Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Mexican government and U.S. Consulate General Ciudad Juárez are working together on the investigation.
