As summer approaches, bear sightings increase in foothill communities

INDIAN HILLS, Colo. (KDVR) – Wildlife sightings typically increase during the spring and summer in Colorado. Many residents of the Indian Hills neighborhood report scavenging for food in yards and garbage collection areas.

FOX31 has obtained video showing a bear and her cub entering Stuart Sauer’s property. The bear took off after Sauer shone a light on the bear and shouted.

Chuck Koch, who has lived in the area since the 1970s, told FOX31 that bears are often spotted between Indian Hills and Evergreen.

“They are out of hibernation and hungry,” Koch said.

Many say they feel bears are becoming more aggressive.

“I let the bears follow me to my door. They have lost their fear of man,” Koch said.

Sauer agreed.

“They’ll sit there and lie in the woods and wait for you to leave,” he said.

Be bear aware in Colorado

Homeowners should lock up trash, remove bird food at night, and keep a close eye on their pets.

Neighbors in the foothill communities realize that encounters with wildlife simply come with the territory.

“If you’re going to live here, you’re only going to have to deal with the bears,” Koch said.
