At least 18 dead in explosions in northern Nigeria

A series of deadly explosions in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state have killed at least 18 people and injured 30, authorities said.

Six people were killed and others injured in one of the suspected bombings during a wedding ceremony on Saturday.

The suspected suicide bombers attacked a wedding, a funeral and a hospital in the town of Gwoza, according to the state emergency response agency.

Borno state has been at the centre of a 15-year insurgency by Islamist militants Boko Haram that has displaced more than two million people and killed more than 40,000.

Boko Haram rose to international prominence in 2014 when it kidnapped more than 270 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok, also in Borno state.

Authorities said 18 deaths occurred on Saturday, including children, adults and pregnant women.

Some local media are reporting a much higher death toll. Nigerian newspapers Vanguard and This Day reported that at least 30 people were killed in the explosions.

The army has imposed a curfew.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Gwoza was captured by Boko Haram in 2014 and recaptured by the Nigerian armed forces in 2015. However, the group has continued to carry out attacks and kidnappings near the town since then.

Last November, twenty people were killed by Boko Haram insurgents as they returned from a funeral service in neighboring Yobe state.

The attack came a day after militants killed 17 people in an attack on the village of Gurokayeya after villagers refused to pay a so-called harvest tax, police said.
