At least one LA County firefighter has been killed by an explosion while battling a truck fire near Palmdale

At least one Los Angeles County firefighter was killed Friday while fighting a fire near Palmdale when some sort of explosion occurred, according to the department.

It happened around 2 p.m., after which crews were dispatched to the 6500 block of E. Avenue for a truck fire in the area, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.

It is still unclear what caused the explosion and how many firefighters were injured.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released. It is not immediately known whether the victims died on the spot or in hospital.

With SkyCal overhead, a large tractor-like vehicle could be seen with black smoke still pouring from the engine compartment. Tens of meters away from the vehicle, an American flag hung over what appeared to be a victim, who was still being doused with water by firefighters in the distance.

This is a development story. Check back for more information.
