Australians are trying to scam pedestrians against drivers

Years ago, when Russian dashcam footage was making waves, we saw quite a few cases of pedestrians acting as if cars were hitting them. Some were truly terrible actors, others much more convincing, but it was clear that the attempts were outright frauds. It seems these tricks have now been imported into Australia, so it’s only a matter of time before they come here.

Ford Expedition owner awarded nearly $57 million in lawsuit.

Dashcam footage of the scam, taken in the Quakers Hills area of Sydney, has been uploaded to Reddit. It shows a driver driving along a residential road until he encounters a woman standing just in the lane.

As the driver slows down, clearly wondering what the woman is doing, she walks closer to the front of the vehicle and then lies down in the road.

That’s when a man walking on the sidewalk on the other side of the street approaches and begins taking videos or photos of the woman in front of the vehicle, supposedly documenting the accident.

The person who shared the video on Reddit said his friend, the driver, was accused of hitting the woman while the other man demanded money from him. To anyone with a functioning brain it’s a scam, but we wonder if sometimes it doesn’t work.

We hope this is just an isolated incident and not part of a growing trend in Western countries. As we said, these types of scams are more popular in Russia and the countries of the old Eastern Bloc. But if they catch on in the West, it means we all have to stay alert and be ready.

Good protection is having a dashcam like this Australian did. That documents everything, which prevents these scammers from making ridiculous claims.
