Bail bondsman identified as victim after deadly fight at downtown jail, Sacramento police say

Sacramento Police Department said the man who died after an altercation on Tuesday broke out outside the downtown Sacramento County Main Jail, was an employee of a bail bond company and that the suspect in the attack is in custody.

Officers were called after 4 a.m. Monday to the 500 block of I Street, in front of the bail bonds offices directly across from the Robert T. Matsui United States Courthouse. Two men began fighting and each suffered injuries, according to archived radio messages reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.

Kevin Brace, 56, died at the scene from his injuries. He worked at Greg Padilla Bail Bonds, police said.

Investigators arrested a “person of interest” on Monday in connection with the brawl. Jacob Levi Mandell, 38, was booked into jail Tuesday and is charged with murder, jail records show.

It was unclear why the two were arguing and whether they were acquaintances. Police declined to provide a motive for the attack and Brace’s employer declined to comment on the death.

Mandell, who is being held without bail, will be arraigned Wednesday.
