BASE jumper dies in Grand Canyon jump

A man died Thursday after attempting to parachute from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, officials said.

The man attempted a BASE jump from Yavapai Point in Grand Canyon National Park around 7:30 a.m. His body was found about 500 feet below the South Rim, along with a deployed parachute, park officials said.

BASE is an abbreviation for building, antennae, span and earth. These are the objects that people parachute from.

It is not permitted anywhere in Grand Canyon National Park.

The man’s body was found on Thursday, and park rangers reached it and removed it on Friday, the National Park Service said in a statement.

His name is not being released until a positive identification is made, the park said. The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.

Yavapai Point overlooks the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. From the rim to the river, it is about a mile vertical.

BASE jumpers sometimes die in accidents while performing this risky activity.

In 2015, two rock climbers, Dean Potter and Graham Hunt, died after BASE jumping in another national park, Yosemite in California.

Also in California, a BASE jumper died in 2022 attempting to jump from the 23-story Palisade UTC building in San Diego.
