Batavia police chief suspended due to investigation

The Batavia police chief has announced that he has been placed on paid administrative leave due to an investigation.

“I was notified today at 5:00 p.m. that I am being placed on administrative leave with pay pending an investigation into an allegation of misconduct while on duty,” Police Chief Jim Young said in a statement to Enquirer media partner Fox19. “I do not know the nature of the allegation, but I trust that Mayor Runck will conduct a full and complete investigation to determine the facts.”

Batavia Mayor C. Scott Runck said in a statement to Fox19 Friday morning that the decision to place Young on administrative leave was made to ensure “a fair and impartial process” in the investigation.

“I would like to emphasize that administrative leave is a routine procedure in such situations and does not imply any prejudice or conclusions,” the statement said. The investigation is being conducted thoroughly and we are working hard to ensure that all relevant facts are carefully assessed.

“To protect the integrity of the investigation, we cannot release any further details at this time. Our priority remains the well-being and safety of our community, and we are taking every measure to ensure that confidence in our village leadership is maintained throughout this process.”

The acting police chief is Corporal Christopher Warner, police confirmed Friday morning.

Batavia is a small town in rural Clermont County with a population of about 2,000. The town’s police department has 10 sworn officers.
