Bayshore High School Journalism Program Excels in Quill & Scroll Honor Society Competition

Kudos to Bayshore High’s Paw Print student journalism program, which won second place in the prestigious Quill & Scroll Honor Society Media Evaluation Awards.

The school newspaper was awarded for general practices, reporting, writing and editing, and visual elements.

“It is clear from your reporting that you have worked hard to write stories that interest your fellow students,” the judges noted. “Your interviewing skills are solid.”

Among the specific works named in the Minneapolis competition were: Autumn Faasse’s article, “50 Years of Change at Bayshore,” and Angel Ochoa’s in-depth article, “Why Culturally Focused History Months Matter.”

Judges also recognized Elizabeth Sanchez’s thoughtful and insightful review of “Out of Darkness,” a young adult novel that explores segregation in schools in 20th-century Texas through a fictional love story between an African-American boy and a Mexican-American girl. The book is based on the true story of a 1937 natural gas explosion that killed more than 300 students and teachers at a school in New London, Texas.

According to Paw Print advisor Jean Faulkit is one of the most banned books in some American school systems.

The jury also complimented the approach of Paw Print’s staff, which included: Gabrielle Rapuzzi, Annabella Stevens, Thomas Blackwell, Alani Castillo And Angel Ochoa-Iniestra.

“Consistently conversational and relatable… the writing has really improved overall from the first issue of the year to the last.”
